Super Cub LP Mod - Build Talk

Josh and David discuss the details of the build process of the Super Cub LP as it gets modified with a brushless outrunner motor, split flaps and ailerons! 

The time-lapse video covers about a 5 hour build time for the modifications and assembly of this R/C airplane.

Here you can see the split flaps in action!

The Super Cub LP is a fun airplane to fly and the new modifications make it even better!

Much better and more to the point would have been to buy the SC parts and build it up right from the bottom up. Undoubtedly the SC is a wonderful platform but it is even better and cheaper to buy the parts and use easily available parts to make it your own.

I agree its a bit more disconnected and rather stale. It was a longer video. This might be good for a quick tip or something like that. It was good to observe with the commentary but got rather boring toward the end with no background music or shop sounds.

I believe those hinges are better called "hatch" hinges. Designed to sit on the inside of a hatch or gear door, bomb bay door, etc and to slightly offset when opened but allow the panel to remain flush when closed. Works this way too.

The format losses the mentorship perspective that the other build videos have. It was nice to see the whole process, but was really disconnected. For somewhat wanting to do this mod, there was not a lot of visual detail of the processes. As entertainment and trivial info, yup, I watched nearly the whole thing (I skipped the second fowler flap).

I do like that you have done a few videos that do not have the FT swappables. I love the swappable, but I also enjoy seeing what else is out there.

No matter what, you guys rock!! Once in a while, it is okay to see but I like the original format better as well.. Still, love the show!!

This format is not bad, but it feels really "budgety" (new word). I really do prefer the original format. It made me feel like I was in the basement or on the field with you. I also feel like I'm involved in what's happening.

Nice to see a whole build like that once in a while, actually.

It was a nice variation and the format could fit some kinds of episodes. Still the crew needs to eat too, so stick to the usual format for the majority of episodes.

Love Flitetest, but not a huge fan of this format. The fast forward segments are fine but I prefer to listen to the comments in the workshop during the build. :)

First off no matter what I love your guys videos! But I have to agree with what most have said so far, in that, its just does not seem as much fun to watch. You do feel like your disconnected from whats happening. I feel I missed something when Chad came in and talked to David its the candor that´╗┐ makes your videos so different. In your other videos we the viewer feel like we are just hanging out in the basement/garage or field with you guys talking about the things we love planes!

Pros: With two people talking it ensures that everything is covered and explained well.
Cons: You can't see what is being done (very well) and seeing is half of the knowledge. The build video is longer than necessary. David and Josh run out of stuff, at least interesting stuff, to talk about. I admit I skipped around the video a little bit towards the end. Like a few others said, you feel disconnected. It's like I'm eavesdropping on a conversation instead of being talked to directly. Especially the end when you can't see anyone and it's just a voice over. Having the old format during the test flight would have definitely been an improvement.

Something similar to the old format would, in my opinion, be best. Maybe have David and Josh talk about what they are going to do and then speed up the video, with music playing, while they do it. Then back to normal speed when they finish that step and start talking about the next. A description, then a video montage of it being done, then a description of the next step and so on.

Keep up the great work. Nothing wrong with trying something new. But you missed the mark with this format.

Fully agree. This article has come just in the right timings, as I wanted to do a similar conversion to a similar plane, but it was too confusing. Old format is preferable. Just keep providing us the excelent quality videos and how tos' we are used to get :)

This format would be good for a change (once and awhile) or a fast tip. But the original format makes me feel like I am right there with you. I would vote for the original format.

I hope by "new format" you guys mean new for some segments and not new as in all FT shows will be like this in the future. It's not bad. But it's not at all up to the quality I've come to expect from FT. Ok as an occasional episode for where the content works well with this format - but I much prefer the usual format that feels like a polished TV ready production.

But on the other hand I'd gladly take this format and more great plans/kits over sponsored reviews like the early days. The sponsored reviews weren't bad either...but got kind of stale for me after awhile.

Having several styles of show to mix things up is a good thing though and I welcome this format if it's not over used.

With the right topic, this format might work. However, I enjoy being able to be able to see up close what is happening. If I were wanting to replicate this project, I would be disappointed that it wasn't clear and that I couldn't see the detail. I wouldn't abandon this format completely. For parts of video or certain topics, it might work well. However, it gets away from what FT seems to be really about. I think most people come to FT to learn and understand, not just be entertained. If you can't see the examples clearly your learning is hindered.

Hey all,
Really enjoyed this video as an owner/crasher of a SC I always enjoy new techniques to building and upgrading the SC, however I think I would have liked it more if Dave was explaining what he was doing and how he did it. An example hot glue hinges. I have never made a hinge from hot glue and was interested in how Dave did his but it never came through. If I had be a newbie builder or repairer I would not have found this useful because its assumed your audience has a clue already. My suggestion,for what it is worth, would be to provide a link to see how a particular step is done so you can go there and learn it. Other than that I like the build videos format I think along with a cool flitetest episode I think it would make a great addition to the show.

for the format, definitely a different feel. I wouldn't veer too far from what you already have going. this format could definitely be useful in some cases but I say stick more with the original. I agree with what tramsgar stated. its nice to see the actual build from start to finish every now and then but not to use this format too often.

for the plane, awesome! love the LP for mods like this. I have some LP mod experience as well. Mine was a little bit... okay WAY overkill. I did what Bixler was saying about buying each individual part separately and did a nitro conversion. I was given an old OS 15 from the owner of Anchorage House Of Hobbies here in alaska. so thats what i used for the power plant. surprisingly it mounted flawlessly onto the firewall with a simple plywood plate. the prop was dead center and the torque angle was perfect. I'll try to put together a video with what i have. I dont have much footage of it and the plane is now retired and hanging from the ceiling at the hobby shop there in anchorage. Thanks guys! keep up the awesomeness!

I've had a Brushless S--cub for several years and It flys great with rudder and elevater .I find too much throttle makes it feel twitchy and that it is struggling. But it is perfect for Hot afternoon sitting under an umbrella with a cold xxxx drink.

Being from Alaska I love seeing a Cub mod. The video reminded me of a directors cut of a DVD. As a teacher though I liked the old format because it was closer to the plane and slower which made stoping and starting easier. Time permitting, do both. The viewer could chose this format to get an overview of the project and use the other format to actually do the project.

I followed the suggestions from this build with my Supercub LP and I love how they turned out. Now my Cub flies so much better! It's definatly not the trainer that I started with 3 years ago. Now the control response is crisp, not spongy like with the stock floppy wing and rudder control. First off I removed the dihedral from the wing and stiffened it with a carbon fiber spar. Then I did the aileron mod with the hot glue hinges- my first and very easy. I also added a power 10 890kv brushless motor and 40 amp speed controll. The motor is over-kill, but it is a lot of fun to fly.

I was wondering, did the flattened wing survive? because surely if it was made with dihedral then forcing it flat would mean it was constantly under strain.

My flattened wing is doing fine. I fly my Supercub at least once per week. Ive even been flying it off the water with floats at my clubs (Ventura County Comets) Float Flys. While flying it with the added weight of the floats on it, the stiffened wing is even more pronounced. When I fly the Supercub at my club, I can often hear some the old-timers proclaim,"It flies real good"
